Celebrate the Motif in May!

While we can’t come together for the Motif No.1 Day in the traditional way, we can still celebrate the Motif! Join organizations and businesses throughout Rockport in honoring our iconic fishing shack. And be sure to purchase your  collectible 2021 Motif poster.

This year’s poster theme is fitting: Save Motif 1 Day! The festival that defines the unique spirit of Rockport has now been quarantined (so to speak) for two years. Rockport Exchange would love to bring Motif No. 1 Day back in 2022, but we need your help! Proceeds from the sale of posters support the all-volunteer community work of Rockport Exchange.

You can purchase online or by stopping by the wonderful establishments, listed below, who have partnered with us in offering the 2021 poster for sale.

Many, many thanks to the following businesses:

The Paper Mermaid, John Tarr Store, Bullseye Books-Flyboys, Tuck’s Candy & Gifts, Seaside Boutique and Beads, Sea and Cellar, Floating Lotus, Wicked Peacock, Love Strut Boutique, Susie’s Stories, Nature’s Body Art, Esmeralda’s, Bearskin Neck Leathers, Katie’s Gift Shop, The Dove, James Russell Goldsmiths, Lula’s Pantry, Coast and Country Boutique, The Last Resort

This year’s poster is designed by our own Darren Mason, with his usual blend of artistic skill, appreciation for Rockport, and a bit of wry humor. Thank you Darren!!!

The Motif by Rockport Artist David Arsenault

Rockport artist David Arsenault submitted  four different depictions of the Motif, each one entirely unique in capturing the Motif in a different mood. Since moving to Rockport five years ago, David has been generous with his talent in donating to the community — providing one of his paintings of the Motif all the way back in  2017 for our annual Motif No. 1 Day Commemorative Poster (see below).

Thank you for your gifts and your ongoing generosity, David!

Every day leading up to Motif No.1 Day on May 16th, we’ll post a picture or video featuring your work ,or a piece from our M1D Fest archives celebrating the amazing place we live and the fishing shack that has become a symbol of all things Rockport.

Need a little inspiration to get started? Check out the work of a few of our favorite Rockporters who colored the Motif and posed their work in front of the Motif. Talk about meta Motif!

If you want to join in the fun, you can start by downloading the original Motif coloring page, below. The next step is to enjoy a relaxing time of coloring and then send in a photo of your work! We’re grateful for the generosity of the artist, Cynthia Bugden, who donated the artwork for the coloring page. Read on to learn more.

Cynthia Bugden, along with her sisters, Patsy & Betsy, create the art and layout for beautiful coloring and painting pages. The sisters are North Shore natives and residents. Cynthia started “Arts of Gold” as a part-time business, painting with seniors locally in nursing homes and assisted living facilities back in 2008. You can see more of her work at www.etsy.com/artsofgoldpaintpages or at facebook.com/artsofgold.
Thank you, Cynthia, for sharing your classic homage to the wonderful Motif #1!
